Pythagoras Day

Pythagoras Day 5 12 13Thursday 5th December 2013 – 5 12 13 – is a Pythagoras Day.

A Pythagorean triple is a set of 3 integers (whole numbers) a, b & c such that:

a2 + b2 = c2

Pythagorean triples can be used to create right angled triangles, like the one above.  You can’t just use any three integers to make a right angled triangle (if you don’t believe me try it: can you draw a right angled triangle with sides 5cm, 8cm & 10cm long), the three sides must be a Pythagorean Triple.

And the next Pythagoras day wont be along for a while – 15th August 2012 (15 8 27) to be precise.

Many thanks to Matt Parker @StandUpMaths for alerting me to this date.  I follow him on Twitter, you might like to, too.

You can find out more about Pythagorean Triples at Wikipedia (and elsewhere.)
